Lunar Eclipse

Partial Phase Umbra

During the partial phase of most lunar eclipses, both the bright part of the moon in the penumbra and the dark part in the umbra are visible to the eye in a telescope, but the film with its relatively limited exposure latitude sees only one at a time. If exposing for the penumbra, the umbra is completely invisible. When exposing for the umbra as in this photo, the penumbra is completely overexposed.
