Lyra

Wide angle photo

Lyra, a very small constellation, can be seen high in the summer evening with its brightest star Vega blazing brightly in the twilight.

Several interesting features of Lyra are the star Epsilon Lyrae, seen to the upper left of bright Vega. This obviously elongated star is a multiple, which can be split into two stars with simple binoculars. A good telescope and steady seeing are required to further split each of these stars in two.

Between the bottom (southern) two stars of Lyra is another treasure, the Ring Nebula. This small but bright object is a favorite of backyard observers. It can be seen as a red "star" in the image above.
