M97, M108

Near and Far

Two deep sky objects, located 45 million light years from another. At the left, the galaxy M108, 45 million light years from Earth, and at the right, M97, the Owl Nebula, 2500 light years from Earth. As they are in the same direction, their distance from another is thus about 2500 light years less than 45 million. The fact that the galaxy appears twice as big as the nebula, but is so much more distant, means that it is about 100 million times bigger than the nebula (which is located within our own galaxy).
