Feldberg

Moonlit Landscape

To observe the spectacular lunar occultation of Saturn on November 3rd, I set up my equipment on the Feldberg in the Black Forest, a location 1400m above the fog and haze of southern Germany. When we arrived, it was quite windy, but the wind quickly died down and we had a comfortable temperature of around zero degrees Centigrade.

This photo shows the moonlit monument on top of the mountain along with the surrounding landscape. Despite the relatively short exposure, it looks like a daytime shot because the moon was very close to full. Only the short star trails in the photo reveal its true nature. The star directly above the monument is Polaris, this photo is actually only the test for a multi-hour star trail shot with the stars turning their celestial circles above the monument.
