Ikeya-Zhang

Comet Ikeya-Zhang, the brightest comet since Hale-Bopp. Barely visible to the naked eye from moderately dark sites, this comet is a beauty in binoculars. A tail several degrees long, and an extremely condensed coma make it a joy to look at. Even though the coma is so condensed that it is extrememly easy to guide on (at moderate magnifications it still looks almost like a star), this photo was not guided, as the exposure time was quite short. It is my first really good photo of a comet. A lot of work was needed to get rid of vignetting, and some is still visible - I must have got a pretty bad 300mm Nikkor lens....
